AsTeRICS Framework Workshop

AsTeRICS - the Assistive Technology Rapid Integration & Construction Set is an open source framework for the efficient design of assistive solutions. It was developed in a 3 years EU project and serves as one technological basis for the work of the AsTeRICS Academy. AsTeRICS allows the creation of end-user ready assistive technology solutions, in particular for people with severe motor conditions (Muscular Dystrophy, Quadriplegia, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, etc.). The workshop provides hands-on experiences with a graphical design editor for assistive solutions.

Participants develop functional assistive setups including alternative input solutions or environmental control systems using various sensors and actuators. In addition, they learn to build their own flexible and affordable solutions with materials availabe in their environment.

The sessions of the AsTeRICS workshop consists of a theoretical and practical hands-on part. The practical part includes step-by-step examples with guidance of the AsTeRICS Academy team. Concrete applications which can be developed together with the workshop participants include:

  • realisation of a head tracker based mouse-control
  • usage of the Arduino microcontroller for creating alternative input solutions
  • digitally controlled PC mouse via switches
  • accessible pong game
  • environmental control by speech recognition

The workshop program is suitable for 5-20 participants, which should have access to a (Windows-) laptop or desktop computer with webcam.

The first AsTeRICS workshop took place at the Czech Technical University in Prague on May, the 6th 2014. In the following there are some impressions of the workshop. Furthermore, you will find the workshop documents in the Download section.
